Janie Meneely, Chesapeake Bay Magazine editor-at-large

Annapolis-born Janie Meneely has spent a lifetime sailing and cruising the Bay, and she’s not done yet. Having graduated from dinghy sailing to being a liveaboard boater on a 40-foot yawl to cruising aboard a Krogen pilothouse trawler and now back to sailing a nimble Tartan 27, she has experienced the Bay from a variety of vantage points and in a wide variety of conditions. As a cruising boater, she’s nosed into just about every nook and cranny the Bay has to offer. Her experiences make her keenly aware of what boaters are looking for by way of cruising amenities, services and recreational pursuits.

She makes a living as a writer and advocate for Bay heritage and traditions, having edited and published BaySailor magazine, a monthly cruising guide that appeared in the mid-1980s, and most recently as managing editor for Chesapeake Bay Magazine, where she remains an editor-at-large. In her award-winning journalistic pursuits, she’s covered people and places from the Northeast River to Hampton Roads.

Janie Meneely’s engaging presentations and ability to answer ad hoc questions about the Bay make her a lively club speaker. Her seminars, ranging from women at the wheel (motivational) to Bay cruising, are a staple of area boat shows. She currently awaits the rising sea level from her upland home in Takoma Park, Md. When ever she can, she sails Petrel out of Shipwright Harbor Marina on Herring Bay.
